Ni hao

We made it safely to China last night, were awed by the airport and easily got a cab to the hotel, Novotel Peace, which seems to be right on the Rodeo Drive of Beijing. We slept, then had a wonderful breakfast at the hotel (it's French so food is very good), then walked around to see a bit of the city. It's the holiday, Chinese New Year, so the streets were eerily empty and quiet. Ed likes to take pictures of weird food in markets; these are chicken feet. I took a 4-hour afternoon nap, while Ed explored some more. He found an outdoor market, where we returned for dinner of noodles, pot stickers and meat on a stick. We bought our first souvenir: a goofy panda hat for Sophie.

Sam is doing very well at Chez Manion, where reportedly he didn't even cry on Day 2. Amy is sending me daily reports and photos about how much fun he is having and all the cute things he says. "There's Jack! and Cware! and Kevin! ... I love them!!!"

I hope I can sleep tonight. Tomorrow we meet up with our guide, George, and some other families for a tour of Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City, which are only about a mile from our hotel. Thanks to everyone for all your well wishes. Only two and half more days till we meet Sophie!

I am reliving our trip to China to get Frances vicariously with you. The lack of sleep sucks. Enjoy the tour-we loved the Forbidden City. We have pictures of me pretending to throw Peter into the really huge gold bowls. Glad Sam is good. House seems fine.

Yikes! Went to your blog to see about posting for you, but you seem to have it all under control. I feel like I've been missing everything. Love the photos. Day 3 for Sam was great. The five of us are running him ragged so he has no time to be sad. Today I thought he said "My mom took a choo-choo train" (he had a mouthful of food at the time) but Andy translated for me: "My mom took two planes [to get to China]." He really has your itinerary down. I kiss him every night for you. --Love, Auntie Amy
